Intellectual Conversation: The New Time-Waster
It's been a while. Almost three weeks to be exact. Life has become a lot more simple lately and the complications that used to arise with every new day seem to be shrinking. Thus, I have not been posting as much.
The world around me is becoming much less complex than what it has been even though we are told that it is supposed to get tougher with age. Someone is going to have to explain that one again for me.
My thoughts are far less complex than they have ever been. I don't know whether it is because I have chosen to remove myself from the complex thinking world or if the complexities of life have become easier.
Maybe, I have taken up the Ferris Beuller mindset. He certainly did have a point when he said, "I'm not European. I don't plan on being European. So who gives a crap if they are socialist. They could be fascist anarchists. It still wouldn't change the fact that I don't own a car."
But whatever 1980's movie frame of mind that I am in, I do know that I am ready for my last semester of college to begin. I am so excited to begin student teaching after this semester.
But there is a bad thing about college starting up again. I can assure you that I am not looking forward to the "stimulating intellectual" conversation that so many of my colleagues actively seek during this time.
It's not that I have become jaded by this type of conversation. "Smart talk" is still interesting to participate in but I think the issue I have is the length of time involved in the process. Honestly, does an intellectual conversation have to last for three hours? Do we really need to take 45 minutes to prove that a lot of politicians are full of the same stuff that pigs roll around in?
I am sure that the people who participate in these may be thinking that they are making progress; solving the world's problems and adding to their own notion's that the world would be a better place if they were in charge.
To me, it just seems like a big waste of time. I've grown tired of listening to them because they seem more like organized whining than actual discussion. Simply put, listening to two people who are fully convinced of their superior thoughts discuss the "important issues" of the day makes me want to head for the nearest exit and bang my head on the outside wall.
For now, I am not one for the intellectual smart talk simply because I have grown tired of it and would rather discuss the batting average of my favorite baseball players.
Welcome back to college! Let the time wasting (intellectual) conversations begin! After all, isn't that all they are good for anymore?
